This is a very beautiful performance. I love everything Diana Ross has recorded. Diana deserves to be honored and earned each and every one of her numerous honors. For you to say Oprah is ultimately responsible for this legend’s recognition by the President is disgusting. This legend won’t be with us forever, and her contribution to music and touching every one of our lives is something for which she deserves to be honored. I think she deserves a documentary. Maybe she could tour with the documentary and give live performances. I think that would flow very naturally.
Thanks for sharing. Yours, with every good wish. Roberta

DR was the quintessential "gold digger". Flo invited her into the group, not the other way around. DR slept with Smokey and any other man she deemed valuable to her career. Mary, Flo and DIANE (her birth name) grew up together as if they were sisters. DR stabbed them in the back by spreading her legs. That's what people with no talent do, cheat, stab, and steal those people who truly possess the real talent.

There was no way Florence Ballard should have died broke. She had never left Detroit and only own one decent sized home after all those million sellers she recorded with the Supremes not to mention the hundreds of live concerts she performed in. How Diana Ross or Berry Gordy can live with themselves is beyond me.

Chart position is based upon airplay, jukebox play ( still very big in the 60s and 70s ), and sales. Album chart positions are strictly based upon sales. Berry Gordy used his influence to get number one records for the Supremes, giving traction to what was already hit. In sum, a number one record is not automatically a million seller.
Motown was not an international company in the sixties. Therefore, the Supremes only charted in the UK and Australia. The Supremes line up with Ross was not that popular in the UK. The line up with Jean Terrrell had more top ten hits in the UK than the Ross line up. Australian sales are not significant. Also, singles do not sell through the years, only albums do.
It wasn't until Mary Wilson sued Motown that the sales figures became public. Motown had refused to release the sales figues to the RIAA, so technically there were no gold or platinum certification until 1979. It was found that many of the sales for the Supremes singles were shockingly low. The gold records were simply 45s spray painted gold, but not as many as believed actually achieved this certification. Prior to 1979 only myth and legend were the sources of Supremes and Diana Ross record sales. It sucks that Nelly has sold more singles and albums in a 6 year stretch than ROSS did in 27 years. It sucks that the singles and sales from Whitney's Bodyguard alone exceeded the total album and singles sales of ROSS solo AND Ross with THE SUPREMES combined. It sucks that Brandy's total album and singles sales fall slightly short of the total album and single sales of both ROSS solo AND Ross with THE SUPREMES. It sucks that Cher solo records sales, not including Sonny, exceed the total sales of both Ross solo and the Supremes. And so on...
The Supremes peak years were 64,65,66, and 67 before right before the MILLI VANNILLI lineup. How many records can you sell in 4 years without proper international distribution? A lot, but not 100 million.
You can listen to Jobeterob /Lielac quote outrageous sales figures 0f 60 million for singles, but remember this is an individual who also stated the Ross is getting a half million a show and has an internet group 7,700 member strong, amongst other lies.
Let us not go into Ross sales, because if you are a Ross fan you would get your feelings real hurt.
Ross' expensive flops album and singles were a key component in Motown's bankruptcy status in the early 80s.
RCA nearly went bankrupt because of her contract which led to a succession of outright flop or moderately successful albums. SFX lost 60 to 80 million on Ross' Return To Love tour. The WIZ was such a flop, it was years before the studios would make any all black films again. Her last two albums on Motown had worldwide sales of approximately 200,000 a piece. Take Me Higher was promoted on the Superbowl ! Ross performed almost the entire album of Every Day is A New Day on the Double Platinum telemovie and promoted the album on Oprah!
Take Me Higher was one of few albums by Ross not to be certified in the UK. Even Working Overtime had a silver certification! However it only takes sales of 60,000 to achieve this. Take Me Higher was considered by her fans as one of her best albums, but couldn't break the 200,000 mark for worldwide sales! At this point, after performing this material before the largest audience available, 115 million , not only did this not affect the sales of the album - her back catalog sales did not increase! Ross has the distinction of being the only performer in history for the Superbowl who did not experience an increase in record sales! Even appearing on Oprah couldn't increase her sales!
After Take Me Higher, Ross should have evaluated whether to continue as a singer. Certainly Motown did, they dropped her after the release of her next album, which was a bigger flop than Take Me Higher.
Motown the Musical should have been an enormous hit but just broke even because of the bullshit story line. It just closed after its return to Broadway after 24 performances. The Ross plot line is the sole reason why the show was not successful.
The public hates this woman, plain and simple.
Do not believe Jobeterob/Lielac - he is a liar.
Hector you should love him. It is idiots like him that led Ross to believe that she could pull off Return To Love when a business analysis of her sales trends by a fourth grader would steeply indicate otherwise. Keep up the good work asshole, you are a gift from heaven to Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson fans seeking retribution!
Mary Wilson was cheated out her money by Motown, and like many other artists from her era, is not financially secure. What she can take comfort in is that Ross is playing grade C and D dates to put cabbage on the table in old age! Ross hovers between the C and D list. By the end of the year she will be a permanent D lister.
Hector, I feel so strongly about seeking retribution for Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard I could next rest in the after life. Yes, as Roberta75 states over and over, from her RELIABLE sources, that I am indeed Tony Turner. Tony Turner is dead, but I am proof that ghosts do exist! Ross - Florence Ballard is coming next - watch it now! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

If you want me to post the total singles sales of the Supremes, I will. I think it is best that I do not. I do not want to disturb the legacy of the Supremes, just ROSS, It would suck to find out Cher sold more singles or equal to that of the TOTAL Supremes singles with Believe than the Supremes did with 12 number ones. Let's not go into Ross single sales.
Jobeterob/Lielac has to bolster Supremes sales to come up with the mythical 100 million sales, when it actuality the total sales of the Supremes and Ross singles and albums is nowhere near that - nowhere. Whitney and Barbra and Madonna have sold that many units. Aretha comes close. These lies are really not for preserving the legacy of the Supremes but to bolster Ross because they claim she was actually the Supremes, and the girls were just her back up singers.
Janet Jackson has sold more records as a solo artist for singles and album sales, than the combined album and singles sales of Ross solo and Ross and the Supremes. Sorry guys.

Jobeterob is a liar. He doesn't really know how many recordings any of the Supremes sold including Diana Ross. I am surprised she sold so little.

The Supremes album sales were nowhere near the sales of the Beatles. The White Album sold 19 million for example. Their 27 albums of original material wiped the Supremes out of the map. The Supremes in no way competed with the Beatles - they were never in that race. Because Motown never released sales records, no one knew what those records sold. Thanks to Mary Wilson's various lawsuits we have accurate data. The court records are public. This data wasn’t available until the eighties.
Look at the reissue figures. The Beatles reissues range in sales from double platinum to 16 million. The Supremes deluxe editions max at 5,000 and the various greatest hits are good for about 15,000. Why do you think Universal is not that interested in these Supremes projects? Also, now that the public knows that many of the records are fraudulent and that the Supremes were the original MILLI VANNILLI, the legacy is forever tarnished, and interest them in history will be greatly diminished. After all, who wants to buy a Diana Ross record? The public also knows it is the genius of HDH that created the hits. No hits before HDH, and and a couple after HDH.
Don't be surprised if Motown gets hit with a class action lawsuit from fans wanting refunds for records they thought featured Mary Cindy and Florence.

Is she singing real breathy to be sexy or because her voice is gone? To me this is a lose/lose. At 82 it is too late in the game to do the Marilyn Monroe bit, and if she has to sing like this cause her voice is gone then it is time to get off the stage.

Chaka Khan had the same problem. She lost her voice but had the surgery to get it back. Diana Ross fell on hard times because of drugs and pills but she is trying to come back. She is doing every date she can to earn the money to pay for the surgery. Then she is doing a woman show on Broadway. Oprah doesn't want to give her the money for the surgery because part of the recovery process is not enabling people. If she give Diana the money, Diana might blow it on pills and Vodka. It is best for Diana to earn her own way. Oprah made arrangements for Diana to get some awards to show Diana she is doing a good job. After the Essence festival, Diana will have enough money for the surgery. I just hate that Diana has to perform live before the surgery. I can't wait to hear her when she does her one woman show!

God took her voice to teach her a lesson about treating people with respect and dignity. I wish her luck with the surgery and the one woman show. Oprah did the right thing by not paying for the surgery. Diana has to learn to earn her way in life instead of manipulating and sleeping with people to get what she wants. I am trying to teach my 16 year old daughter the same thing.

This famous celebrity alcoholic was a role model for African-American women all over the world in the 60's, 70's and 80's. She was glamorous, rich and talented - all without losing her ethnic roots. Yet, she had a little secret. Most people thought it was the love child (daughter Rhonda) that she bore with Motown producer Berry Gordy. However, after voluntarily checking herself into a rehab center in 2002 and an embarrassing drunk driving stint in Arizona, the public realized that Diana’s secret was a love affair with the bottle. Since then, Diana Ross has found a way to keep her drinking under control. Yet, her alcoholism has tainted the public's view of her, which can be seen in recent Saturday Night Live (SNL) skits. Ross is not portrayed as a diva and acclaimed actress, but as a drunken mess with silly quirks. Unfortunately, her public relations team has not been able to clean up the mess caused by her excessive drinking.
