Franco Zeffireli contacted Lionel Richie to write the theme song to Endless Love. Originally, it was planned as an instrumental, but after it was finished, Franco asked Lionel Richie to write some lyrics, and perhaps Ross could record them. It became a duet and the rest is history.

I see why it was a duet. Did you hear her solo version on Why Do Fools Fall In Love? Dreadful.

The only reason Why Do Falls Fall In Love went platinum is because the public thought the duet was on the album.

I heard that Lionel Richie submitted it for a Commodore album first, and they rejected. Diana Ross came into the picture further down the line.

In Secrets of A Sparrow, Ross claimed it was for her. Then Berry Gordy decided to capitalize on her MASSIVE popularity and have her duet with Lionel Richie to launch his solo career.

Endless Love was really Lionel Richie's record. Her voice is so thin and whispery here. Diane always sings her nose. Would not have been a hit solo. They didn't know how to fix her voice up at RCA so you can really hear the deterioration in this song.

Ross and Richie recorded the song for Motown, and it was used as the theme for the Franco Zeffirelli's film adaptation of Scott Spencer's novel Endless Love. Produced by Richie and arranged by Gene Page, it was released as a single from the film's soundtrack in 1981. While the film Endless Love was a modest box-office success, the song became the second biggest-selling single of the year (first was "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes) in the U.S. and reached number 1 on the Hot 100, where it stayed for nine weeks from August 15 to October 10, 1981. It also topped the Billboard R&B chart and the Adult Contemporary chart, and reached number 7 in the UK.
The soulful composition became the biggest-selling single of Ross' career, and her 18th and final career number-one single (including her work with The Supremes). It also was Richie's highest charting single, and the first of several hits for Richie during the 1980s. Ross recorded a solo version of the song for her first RCA Records album, Why Do Fools Fall in Love, the duet version being her last hit on Motown. The song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for Richie, and was the second song with which Ross was involved that was nominated for an Oscar. It also won a 1982 American Music Award for Favorite Pop/Rock Single.

"YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND, THE PRESSURE of that 24 hours was pretty incredible," Lionel Richie recalls on the latest episode of the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast, hosted this week by Billboard associate chart manager Trevor Anderson.
The hectic span that Richie is recounting? The stressful recording session that resulted in his now-classic duet with Diana Ross, "Endless Love."
On paper, the collaboration sounded like a no-brainer: Ross, then 37, the former leader of The Supremes who had scored five solo Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits, and Richie, then 32 and the frontman of The Commodores, a band that had landed seven top 10 hits (including two No. 1s), would record the theme song for Franco Zeffirelli's film Endless Love, starring Brooke Shields.
In reality, Ross and Richie were so busy with their respective schedules that finding studio time together proved nearly impossible, given the deadline for including the song on the soundtrack. The solution: When Ross played a gig in Lake Tahoe, Nev., Richie flew to nearby Reno, where a late-night session was booked. Ross drove there after her show, and recording began at 3 a.m.
There were "so many moving parts," Richie says: The song needed to be turned around in just 12 hours, and "I'm holding up the movie. I have to get the whole song done tonight. Make or break, you follow me?"
"Endless Love" proved worth the strain. The ballad, which was written and produced by Richie, not only topped the Hot 100 for nine weeks starting on Aug. 15, 1981, it reigns as the Hot 100's top duet of all-time. It was Ross' sixth and (so far) final No. 1 hit as a solo artist and Richie's first, which caused tension within The Commodores. He departed the band soon after and charted a dozen top 10 hits on his own.
Richie and Ross have performed "Endless Love" together live only once, at the 1982 Academy Awards, where it was nominated for best original song. Both singers continue to tour, and 34 years later, Richie, now 67, says he's eager to collaborate with Ross again.
"Hey, Diana: Say yes to Lionel and let's get this thing going!"
