It's such a great shame HDH never recorded a version of WDOG with Mary singing lead. I think the song would really suit her voice. She is such a huge part of this song anyway given that her voice is so prominent in the background. Whether or not it would have gone on to become the smash it did who knows?.......It would be fun to compare and contrast though.

Absolutely. It almost sounds like a duet at times with Diana Ross.

Yes, it could have been a hit or it could have been the end of The girls working with HDH again.

I really don't think it would have been a big hit with Mary on lead. It was Diana's unique voice that sold that record. It was Diana's voice that made those 12 songs go to number one

I think it could have been a hit with Mary on lead, but perhaps not a number 1. I agree that it was Diana's pleading voice that stood out and really sold those pop valentines. Having said that i have always thought "Come See About Me" might have suited Marys laid- back, Mary Wells type vocal style.....I guess we will never know, but it's fun to speculate

I was there in the early 60s when they began as the Supremes and I agree with history, Diana Ross was the best lead singer for the group and for Where Did Our Love Go.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Vgalindo!!! I'm so glad somebody had the good sense and the awareness to say that! No disrespect to the other ladies, but let's face it, Diana's voice was absolutely the key to The Supremes being a success. I've always described her voice as "chocolate covered candy coated". Her voice has that "it factor" that is just so appealing to the ear that even after over 50 years she's still selling out arenas. Now you add to that her beautiful extremely photogenic face with those big beautiful eyes and that magnificent totally engaging smile and that God given star quality, in my opinion Mary and Florence should have hit their knees every night and thanked God that they were in a group with her.
I get so tired of reading "what if this", or "what if that". That makes absolutely no sense to me. What has happened has happened and there's no way to go back in time and change it. I believe Berry knew exactly what he was doing and he recognized that Diana was the one who had the goods to deliver which would generate phenomenal success. The combination of Mary and Florence's voices was wonderful for singing the background vocals, and very well complimented Diana's lead, but let's face it, even though both of them could sing, neither one of them had/has that intangible "it factor" as far as tonal quality, deliverance or presence that translates into hit records. History has proven that.
It is simply true that not every voice just is cut out to sing lead. There are some voices, due to the tone quality, color and texture that actually sound better singing background vocals, just as there are some voices that sound wonderful as the lead, but don't sound good on backgrounds, primarily when stacked. Diana would be one example. In my opinion due to the unique tone quality of her voice, the sound isn't quite as appealing when she stacks her own backgrounds. Then there are some voices that sound wonderful as the lead, and just as wonderful stacked as backgrounds, Brandy being the best example, as well as Chaka and Stevie just to name a few. Let's just be glad things happened the way they did with The Supremes and enjoy and celebrate the wonderful music that we were given!

I've been going through the Diana Ross threads in this forum. Most of them are based on the premise of what if this action were taken or what would have happened if or the merits/demerits of an unsuccessful project. Then the members gang up and brawl. Then the Administrator has to delete the thread or parts of the thread and members are banned. I noticed all the members banned in the forum are due to a Diana Ross related fight. It got so bad the Administrator had to speak out on this. Nancy Wilson said an artist chooses their audience. Poor Miss Ross.

If that is true, then why did they have 6-7 flops in row with Diane's voice on the lead?

Mary's version/the duet version would've been a respectable top 20 hit. Diana's was definitely key for its huge success. It helped to set them apart from the Marvelettes, who were the ones who perfected the two leads within the Motown hit-making girl groups, and MR&TV's.

And every time I enter such a thread, I go "CALL IT DEJA VU" like I was Teena Marie lmao it's sad. Anyways, the Supremes are legends and Diana Ross is the queen. That's all.

I think Mary would have done well singing lead, but could imagine Flo and Diana singing back-up? Imo, that would not have worked at all. WDOLG work well with Diana on lead and a Mary and a faint voice Florence in the background.
