That is explained at 6:01 in the video. By lowering the key, that 'something special' in Diana's voice was accentuated. Had the key been lowered for the earlier flops, the Supremes might have had their breakthrough hit earlier.

Holland-Dozier-Holland's writing, producing and in Diane's case COACHING, along with Mary and Florence's expert harmonies, the Funk Brothers and Berry Gordy's acute business sense combine with Al Abrams PR skills, Barney Ales sales skills and a host of other unsung Motown personnel (shout outs to Maxine Powell, Cholly Atkins, Maurice King, Gil Askey, etc,etc etc.) are all responsible for the Supremes having so many hits!

Even if Mary had learned to sing back then she was not going to be the cross-over that the company wanted to put them on the map internationally. HDH, The Funk Brothers, The Andantes and Diana Ross as lead, Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard and Cindy Birdsong gave Motown that visibility

As much as I love all the Supremes and their God-given abilities, we must remember that in interviews the writers of 'Where Did Our Love Go' mention that they had worked out sophisticated harmonies for Mary and Florence to sing. Even with coaching, Mary & Florence were having significant difficulties mastering those harmonies. So much so that the very basic, simplified harmonies used on the record were created as a compromise just in order to get the song recorde

So much so that the very basic, simplified harmonies used on the record were created as a compromise just in order to get the song recorde Yeah well, legendary DJ and TV personality Robin Seymour witnessed a recording session of Diana Ross doing a Supremes lead back in sixties and he was shocked to learn that they had to spoon feed each line and sometimes word by word to Ross. She didn't even know when to start singing once the music started. He concluded (after Berry Gordy yelling at her and throwing up his hands), that Diane had NO natural ability! Years later Mr. Gordy would confessed that he probably never broke even on Diana Ross recordings because, according to him, she was very expensive to produce and record. Now why would that be?

Diana Ross sings from her brain and not from her soul.

Liar, liar pants on fire! She's sold 16.5 million. You should not try to give her credit for the Supremes sales as that was a group effort. Also, she never recognizes the Supremes anyway...................... 16.5 million is all!

Marv/Hector Miss Ross and its getting worse and worse and worse. If somebody trashed Mary Wilson on a daily basis at SD and told the lies about Miss Wilson that he tells about Miss Ross theyd get banned. Its a disgrace.
Fondly,
Roberta
