I think the reason why I love Ross' "The Lady Sings...Jazz and Blues" concert from 1993 is because she is in 'the room' at all times, not running off during every other song to change costumes. It's sophisticated, and flows so much better. I did see Cher back in 1988-89? and yes, it was distracting to see her change 1000 times as well.
Once during an intermission for the second half is fine, but the way Ross and Cher keep running off ruins the show for me. I'm there for a concert, not a fashion show.

due to this post I watched "Mahogany" the other night, while it's a good movie,it's definitely a full on piece of 70's kitsch. The message that a woman shouldn't want to be a success because her man isn't or can't be as successful so she should give up her dream even on the cusp of her fulfilling her life's desire was loud and clear. Also Diana is a very good actress, she lifted that picture to a level that it probably didn't deserve. And she is absolutely stunning throughout.

What happened with Diana Ross in 1986?
This came to my mind mainly because of the topic on US radio and ageism. Someone mentioned Madonna's diminished fortunes after American Life and someone else mentioned that back in the 90s older stars such as Cher and Tina could still get the occasional hit single. My question regards Diana Ross. Diana Ross had 23 Top 40 hits from 1970 through to 1984 including 6 number 1s. She had also 18 Top 40 solo albums. In 1985 she participates in USA For Africa's line-up. And her career finishes. From 1986 till today she never scored another Top 40 hit and more strangely yet she only scored 1 Top 40 album (I Love You in 2007). At the same period she kept on having smaller hits in the UK but she still had the occasional smash hit (When You Tell Me That You Love Me for example). So is the demise of Diana Ross an example of ageism or something else happened in 1986?

Age mixed with being a cunt when she was on top. They had allot of young 18-25 year old female singers, plus MTV was running everything and not many 40+ year olds females were making the cut. Now add her personality and the way she rubbed people when she was running shit.

Not to mention no one was buying her with the Bee Gees, oh, and that Mary Wilson book that came out definitely didn't do her any favors.

Her sixties nemesis Patti LaBelle. She got a number-one album and hit the same year Diana was struggling in America. hah! Aretha Franklin was still having success as well and let's not forget Tina Turner.
Diana Ross' star faded so quickly. Oh and who can't forget the rise of her former "protege's" sister. wink

Honestly it had more to do with the Bee Gees involvement more than "age" which wasnt a factor in the biz yet, that was more a later 90's thing for everyone when teen pop broke sales records. The Bee Gees were blacklisted "though" undercover, well not really. So she did pretty well with "swept Away" but when she worked with the Bee Gees on Chain Reaction, which was huge in the UK, the Bee Gees were struggling in america with getting back on radio, even though they had huge hits in the UK at the time with "You Win Again" and "Esp"

Though I've never been fortunate enough to see Barbra in concert, from the videos you can tell Barbra's concerts are 'events'. Pure sophistication - a real show. Ross' concerts seem to be all over the place (from what I recall seeing her in the 80s ), with no sophistication at all. Not an event - just a mishmash often interrupted for a costume change. Babs can't stand Diane lol She made a catty remark about Diana when she covered one of her songs and said "Who the hell is she to sing my song, there's only one Barbara Streisand".

.....and Janet Jackson as well. But let's not forget about Madonna's rise to become a potential queen of MTV. I really don't think Diana stood a chance
