Now I know why these very talented ladies have trashed Ross in interviews. I remember Diahann Carroll stating Ross slept her way to the top. Carmen McRae pulled no punches when it came to Ross, coming outright and saying she couldn't sing.
I knew Oprah was behind Ross getting the Essence gig. I thought this is her last chance. at any comeback Ross received favorable press releases, in which they pretended she was the headlining act for the festival. I questioned her place in the festival because she is not a contemporary presence anymore, and she is no longer a star. In 1994 when the festival started, it would have been a major coup for Ross to participate. In the years since then, Ross has brought about her own downfall for reasons covered extensively in this forum.
Ross' music is not played on stations that feature music of the 70s, 80s, and certainly not the 90s. There are no 60s stations because that audience has aged out and has no appeal to advertisers. Ross' music is not living on, the true test of a legend. In the 90s people hated her, now the new generation doesn't know who she is. However, they know Earth Wind and Fire, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Patti Labelle, Temptations are and so on. Her last hit was 33 years ago. Would you expect the record buying audience in 1975 to care about someone who last had a hit in 1942?.
1985 someone who last had a hit in 1952?
Yet, Ross in the minds of the Little Girls of Soulful Detroit is still relevant, fresh, and exciting.
Ross played to a half empty house at the festival. This was a first because the festival has always had a capacity crowd, so this deserves further analysis. Did Ross turn people away is the question.
What concerns me is that Ross wore the same costumes that she has been using for the past decade and a synthetic hair weave for the Festival. Black audiences are aware of these things, very aware.

I need to clarify one thing you said. Yes Ross played to a half empty house, but she was on the bill with John Legend (who no doubt was the biggest draw) and India Arie. Diana Ross' "star power" has been estimated to have generated around 2,000 tickets for a 47,000 person capacity arena! So even that audience was not even all hers.

The last four concerts I have seen were Gladys Knight, Patti Labelle, Dionne Warwick and Diana Ross. The only one who had an opening act was Diana with Rhonda which was a different twist. I am sure Rhonda was there to gain exposure from the crowd. These three women probably travel with some consistency throughout the year and perform from anywhere to 55- 75 Minutes in concert. I am sure if they had opening acts their sets would be shorter. Shortening the time would definitely lose my interest since I am there to see them.
I am sure these women know this and on top of that means depending on other artists and bands which drives the question of why bother at this age of the game.
Lena Horne toured up in her seventies for some time if I remember right and then toured with Tony Bennett (I believe) for an exceptional work of showmanship for the crowd who wants something elegant. Also, one of the reasons I watch these ladies is because Ms. Horne at the age of 76 released her first LP in over a decade. Now that's what I call real royalty at its finest (We'll Be together Soon).
As time goes by we will see what transpire with Gladys, Patti, Dionne, Diana, and hopefully just one more time Nancy Wilson. As for me right now no warm up acts.

Captainjames why do you and your Diana Ross buddies always lie and say that Diana is selling out from coast to coast when you know that is not true. When you know that do not believe it and can prove it? What is the purpose of lying like that? What does that do for Diane? Does it make her paycheck bigger? I don't think so. I am sure she gets paid based on the number of tickets sold. She's been losing big time every since "The Return to Love Tour". She cannot be compare to the truly great ones, so why put that kind of pressure on her? You hate Mary Wilson, but she is getting better gigs than Diana at times. I just don't understand you.
Diana never use to tour this much, almost non-stop. She will play a super market opening (no pun intended even though she spends most of her off time at the supermarket.) Why is she trying to play any and every place that will have her?

Listen Hector GURL, you delusional and ignorant son/daughter of a Whore. Diana's gigs are 20 times more prestigious that old Moisty Walliams. Old aunt mary is broke again and weary from working for $750 a night to feed Turdkissa, the obese heifer mary had with Pedro the Dominican Pimp. poor Mandy Williams and that awful drag king Lena Horne show she travels around with for old elderly sissy Queens like TWTR4SHIT and his sissy fiancé Marv-Hector/DetroitLIAR313. aunty mary should be singing on death row to charles manson and wayne wilson, If mary's singing doesn't make them confess it sure as hell would kill them. The old HO can't sing for shit and its gotten so bad they now hand out ear plugs at aunty mary's Lena Horne shows and Butt Plugs for her Biggest, oldest and GAYEST Fans TWTR4EVER and his old loose assed boyfriend DetroitLIES313/Marv/Hector. LMAOl. aunt Mary hadn't had a good solo gig since Diana left the Supremes you dumb wad of old disease filled cum.

Ross is in a league of her own when it comes to star power and iconic presentation. No one before or since. Her longevity speaks for itself.

What is remarkable about Ross is that she is 73 and still giving us her unique glamour and style -- almost unchanged in 40 years. And she still sounds wonderful.

My only quibble with her recent shows has been the set list. "More Today than Yesterday" is a yawn compared to some of the classic recordings she no longer performs.

That may be remarkable, but it is also a big problem for her! Her whole image is stale and reeks of "from another time and place". Being unchanged in 40 years is definitely not a good thing in the Entertainment business!

Mary Wilson has the exact same longevity and is doing great business all over the World. Aretha, Dionne, Gladys, Patti, Cher, Barbra,Chaka, etc. all of them are iconic and have longevity. Diana Ross is not in a league of her own. She is only special to HER fans.

You make many, many good points here. Other than the few die-hard fans she has left, it's "Diana Who?" for the rest of the World. For most people that enjoy music regularly, Diana Ross has not existed since "Missing You" way back in 1984 during the Reagan Administration. LOL!!!

You noticed that they put Diana Ross on during the first night of the Essence Festival? They never put the popular acts on first like that. Even with India Arie and John Legend, the stadium was still almost empty. Diana Ross was never a headliner. Mary J. Blige and Chance the Rapper were the real headliners. They put the lightweights on first. Just like when her son got married, no one in America was interested. No one in New Orleans for the Festival was interested in seeing her. It would devastate Diana Ross fans if a poll of the audience had been done on Friday night, the first night of the festival to learn that most of that small crowd actually came to hear John Legend.
At least Mary Wilson was billed as the true headliner for the Royal Variety Show at the London Palladium on June 25th.
Oprah is going to have to try to come up with something else for Diane. A Tyler Perry movie not be so out of the question now after all. LOL!!!!

"mary wilson was billed as the headliner at the London Palladium" LMAO. You dumb son of a whore Marv-Hector/DetroitSISSY313. Look at this bunch on nobodies aunty mary was on the bill with! Moisty Walliams played with Bradley Walsh, Roger and Nookie Bear, Nick Heyward, Martha Reeves, Sophie White, Laura Evans, Vladimir and Anton. The audience had barely heard of Myrna Wilcox and Martha Reeves but they sure as hell had ever heard of the rest of this tacky bunch of wannabes. You are one illiterate, dumb, obese old queen Marv-Hector. The tickets at the Palladium started at $15 for fucks sake. LOL. Another gig where old whoreish aunt mary wailed and croaked out Diana's hits for $800 plus a round trip coach seat to London unless your old Cuban Ho flight attendant of a boyfriend got aunt mary an upgrade to an exit row seat so that chin she bought in Tijuana didn't bump into the seat in front of her. Headlining LOL, You dumb fat old fag. All that nasty dick you and TWTR4EVAH are slurping on affecting your diseased brain.

Oprah is going to have to try to come up with something else for Diane. A Tyler Perry movie not be so out of the question now after all. LOL!!!! Ross is not an act that is appropriate for the Essence Festival. Knowing that she playing to the largest audience since her Jamaica fiasco, I thought she would prepare for it. By preparing I mean a new show, new costumes, new arrangements etc. Ross came out in the same clothes and same show she has been running for 11 years.
I was told tickets sales were so low for her set, they gave the tickets away to save face. The crowds picked up exponentially for the acts that followed Ross. There wasn't a problem with John Legend or India Arie, but I was told people didn't want to see Ross so they stayed away from the entire show, hurting John Legend and India Arie.
John Legend and India Arie have had successful tours recently. Ross with all of her touring has yet to make the top 190 touring acts. What made the promoters think Ross would be successful at the festival?
This is the first time there was a half empty house for an Essence Festival and it was the first time Ross played. Coincidence?
